Insurer Increases Agility With an Optimized Enterprise Architecture

Santam, South Africa’s leading short-term insurer with more than R17 billion in assets, a nationwide contact center, a large intermediary network and over 650,000 policyholders, faced costly, slow IT changes and frustrated staff because it lacked a centralized enterprise architecture. Teams relied on fragmented tools and Microsoft Word templates, producing redundant paper specifications that hindered alignment between business and IT.

Santam implemented a repository-based EA using ARIS (introduced in 2008) and a model-driven iBAS methodology grounded in TOGAF, ArchiMate, BPMN and UML. Re-usable building blocks, a common metamodel and a single reporting script (EasyReport), together with targeted training, produced model-generated deliverables, boosting productivity, collaboration and solution quality, speeding time-to-market and lowering overall costs—at a marginal 2.5% annual overhead—now applied across strategic and non-strategic initiatives.
