HMRC Saves £126 Million & Improves the Customer Experience

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), the U.K. tax authority, faced rapidly growing volumes of online transactions as it developed digital delivery channels and became the first customer for the Government Gateway. Its existing DIS interface to the Gateway—based on a legacy Microsoft environment—needed greater resilience, scalability and more responsive support to meet rising customer demand and deliver a better user experience.

Software AG, with partners including Fujitsu and Capgemini, replaced the legacy DIS with a webMethods-based solution (including the Tamino XML server) as part of the Aspire contract, providing a scalable, resilient platform and 24/7 support. The platform supported a 250% increase in online self-assessment filings (2007–2012), a record 9.45 million SA returns in 2012 with over 80% filed online, peak processing of 445,000 filings in one day (37,460 in one hour), and delivered £126 million in efficiency savings.
