A Software AG Case Study
Hibernian General Insurance of Ireland, one of the country’s largest insurers, needed to improve service to brokers and policyholders while cutting the time and cost of policy administration. Its core Branch Policy System (BPS) was a character‑based legacy application that contained decades of critical business logic but was slow and expensive to change.
Hibernian refactored BPS to separate presentation and data access from business logic and launched a Web interface, blive, that reuses existing Natural/Adabas functionality via MQ and J2EE layers. The modernization supports 800,000 policies (2 million transactions) per year, moved the majority of policies online (about 95% of home policies), reduced processing time from seven days to seven minutes, refactored 25 programs in under a month, and delivered an expected ROI in roughly 13 months while lowering development and administration costs.
