Case Study: HealthCare.gov achieves massive scalability and reliability with Software AG's Terracotta BigMemory

A Software AG Case Study

Preview of the HealthCare.gov Case Study

HealthCare.gov in perfect health with Terracotta BigMemory

Software AG worked with HealthCare.gov—the U.S. Affordable Care Act enrollment site—which after its 2013 launch suffered serious performance, scalability and reliability problems during peak enrollment windows. The site needed a fast fix to handle massive concurrent user loads, prevent data loss and ensure stable operation when millions of citizens were comparing plans and signing up.

Software AG deployed its Terracotta BigMemory in‑memory data fabric to provide clustered caching and Fast Restart capabilities. The solution was implemented quickly, allowed horizontal scaling to dozens of Terracotta nodes and hundreds of application servers, and delivered measurable results—supporting as many as 187,000 concurrent users and 320,000 requests per minute, enabling multiple smooth enrollment seasons and rapid cache recovery without data loss.
