A Software AG Case Study
A regional subsidiary of a multinational power distributor that serves households, businesses and more than 1,000 utilities across a 190,000 km network—with roughly 60% of its generation from renewables—faced rising challenges: integrating distributed renewable generation, no visibility into medium- and low-voltage network faults, high transformer maintenance costs, poor reliability in remote locations, and the need for asset monitoring where internet is limited or absent.
Using the Cumulocity IoT Platform, the utility deployed a remote transformer monitoring solution that integrated with its Network Operation Center, delivered real-time condition monitoring, and supported reliable SMS and HTTPS communications for no- or low-connectivity sites. The cloud-based, highly scalable system (tested up to 9 million devices) enabled alarm management (SMS, email, voice), faster rollouts and reduced field service work—cutting operating costs by about 50% and significantly improving responsiveness and grid reliability.
