Flughafen Zürich - Customer Case Study

Flughafen Zürich AG, operator of Zurich Airport (26.3 million passengers in 2015), faced a highly heterogeneous IT landscape that required millions of daily data exchanges across passengers, airlines, ground crew, security and air traffic control. With up to 100,000 flight update messages per day and many one-to-one file exports, every change previously meant coordinating 30–40 external service providers, which was slow, costly and inflexible.

The airport built StarGate on the webMethods suite (ESB and Broker) to create a standards-based SOA gateway and empower an in-house integration team. Today ~300 interfaces (including SAP and Conextrade) are managed centrally, enabling real-time monitoring, device-level automation (doors, PLCs), IP telephony and mobile services. The result: faster in-house responses, improved service quality and scalability, ROI within a year and estimated cost savings in the hundreds of thousands of Swiss francs.
