Estonian eHealth Foundation - Customer Case Study

The Estonian eHealth Foundation, which develops national e‑health solutions, launched a nationwide Electronic Health Record (EHR) initiative in 2008 to centralize medical records for about 1.3 million citizens and give clinicians online access anytime. The main challenge was replacing a paper‑based, error‑prone workflow and connecting many disparate provider systems without costly reengineering of existing IT infrastructures.

By deploying Software AG’s webMethods Integration Server as an ESB (with Global Consulting Services support), the foundation enabled seamless, standards-based exchange of medical documents across heterogeneous systems. The result was faster, more patient-centered care with less paperwork and better knowledge sharing—scaling to millions of documents (over 1.6 million by mid‑2010), rapid growth in e‑prescriptions, and full hospital participation nationwide.
