California State Teachers Retirement System - Customer Case Study

California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS), the world’s largest educator-only pension fund serving 868,000 members, runs its mission‑critical START application on Adabas & Natural. To reduce rising mainframe operating costs, the agency sought a way to shift Natural batch processing onto less-expensive IBM zIIP processors without disrupting existing systems.

CalSTRS implemented Software AG’s Natural Batch for zIIP and required no changes to Natural code or JCL. The pilot recouped its investment in five months and saved $623,768 in the first eight months, while maintaining comparable performance, lowering total mainframe TCO, and giving the agency greater flexibility to run additional workloads on the mainframe.
