Bega Cheese butters up supply chain with IoT

Bega Cheese, one of Australia’s largest dairy producers with a leading retail cheese brand, faced a logistics problem: fresh milk must move quickly from more than 5,700 farms to factories, yet supplier reporting was largely manual. Farmers phoned in vat levels and quality checks, tankers sometimes delivered substandard or warm milk, and Bega lacked real‑time visibility to optimise pickups, reduce waste and schedule production efficiently.

Bega partnered with Swinburne University and deployed NBIoT sensors and Software AG’s Cumulocity IoT platform (backed by a CRC‑P grant) to monitor vat levels, temperatures, cleaning frequency and truck conditions in real time. The system automates pickup requests, improves traceability and quality routing, reduces unnecessary journeys and transport costs, speeds payments to farmers, and can scale to 100+ suppliers while enabling better production scheduling and future export container monitoring.
