A Software AG Case Study
James Cook University (JCU), a leading teaching and research institution in North Queensland, launched Australia’s first accredited Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Systems and IoT Engineering to teach the full IoT ecosystem. The university faced the challenge of building a new program that combined electrical engineering, cloud platforms and big‑data analytics, while giving students hands‑on experience with real sensors, industry guidance and a technology partner to support projects and curriculum.
JCU partnered with Software AG, adopting the Cumulocity IoT platform and IoT Education Package to deliver workshops, capstone supervision and ready‑made IoT components. The pre‑configured platform sped up student development of real‑world environmental and agricultural projects (one was commercialized), produced strong employer interest with job offers for graduates, attracted new students to the course, and supported regional monitoring initiatives such as water quality and reef protection.
