Softserve’s augmented reality App reconstructs a disappeared Wooden medieval ukrainian castle

Tustan, the custodian of the historic cliff-based fortress in the Ukrainian Carpathians, wanted to bring the disappeared medieval wooden castle back to life for visitors. SoftServe was consulted to develop a mobile augmented reality (AR) application that could reconstruct the IX-XVI century fortress despite the lack of intact structures and the site’s unusual rocky terrain.

SoftServe created the Tustan AR app using physical measurements, drones, photogrammetry, and computer-vision techniques such as SFM and MVS to build an accurate 3D model aligned with the real landscape. The result is a live, on-site AR experience that works in any weather and is also available for remote download in the App Store and Google Play, with code and models shared openly for future heritage reconstructions.
