Designing Assistive Solution Based On Hp Ipaq Pda

HP’s Disney parks accessibility team needed a lightweight, durable, all-day assistive device for guests with hearing and visual disabilities. Working with Softeq, they used the HP iPAQ PDA as the platform for a handheld solution that could combine captioning, audio support, and visual assistance into one easy-to-carry device.

Softeq and HP re-engineered the HP iPAQ into the award-winning DURATEQ, adding custom hardware, rugged casing, and software to support synchronized captions, audio description, and assistive listening. The result reduced guests’ need to carry multiple devices, simplified maintenance, and lowered development costs while delivering a more accessible, convenient park experience; the device weighs just 7.2 ounces and supported Disney’s expansion of accessibility services.
