Cumbria County Council secures consistent device estate to enhance mobile working capabilities

Cumbria County Council, the local authority serving around 500,000 residents across a large, remote area of North West England, needed to refresh an ageing device and software estate to support agile working. Facing unsupported Windows 7 devices, rising upgrade complexity, and tight budget constraints, the council turned to Softcat PLC to help find a cost-effective path to Windows 10 and Office 365.

Softcat PLC delivered a tender-led solution centred on 3,500 HP ProBook x360 440 devices, later increased to 4,250, with secure warehousing and phased delivery to suit the council’s needs. By closely collaborating with Cumbria County Council and HP Inc, Softcat PLC provided a consistent, high-performing device estate that improved remote working, enabled rapid rollout of Microsoft Teams, and reduced disruption by supporting quick device swaps and continuity of service during repairs.
