The Brazilian Navy required reliable oceanographic and meteorological data to support its operations and research missions in the challenging conditions of the Southern Ocean and Antarctic region. Sofar Ocean's solution was the deployment of a Spotter buoy equipped with a satellite modem for two-way communication, providing real-time data on waves and wind. This implementation immediately highlighted significant discrepancies in the existing forecast models, proving the critical need for real data. The data collected is essential for improving forecast accuracy and directly supports the safety of the Brazilian Navy's Antarctic operations, with the information made freely accessible to the global scientific community.
