BIMCO quantifies Thermal Dome rerouting costs at under 1% with Sofar Ocean

The customer, BIMCO, one of the world's largest international shipping associations, partnered with vendor Sofar Ocean and used its Wayfinder Voyage Simulator product. Their challenge was to quantify the potential cost to shipping operators of designating the Thermal Dome, a marine biodiversity hotspot, as a protected area, which would require vessels to either reroute or slow down.

Sofar Ocean used its Wayfinder Voyage Simulator to model different scenarios for a representative container ship voyage. The solution revealed that rerouting around the area added less than 1% to the total voyage cost, while slowing down also resulted in a modest net cost increase. These results provided BIMCO with a data-driven, quantifiable foundation to show that the protective measures were operationally feasible for the shipping industry.
