Regione Lombardia launched the Data Lombardia open-data portal to make government information more timely, transparent, and useful for citizens and performance management. Faced with limited IT resources, time-consuming manual updates, and a local solution that lacked needed features, the region ruled out building a platform from scratch because of cost and long time-to-market.

Lombardia adopted Socrata’s turnkey open-data platform on Microsoft Azure, using Socrata’s publishing API (SODA) for automated data refreshes and built-in charting and mapping for easy public communication. The move cut about 47 hours per month in manual updates, enabled metadata refreshes as often as every 12 hours, lowered total cost of ownership, sped deployment, and freed staff to focus on higher‑value initiatives.
