King County Elections Takes Open Data Mobile

King County Elections, serving nearly 1.2 million registered voters in Washington’s most populous county, faced a tight deadline to deliver mobile-friendly election information and results ahead of the Nov. 6, 2012 election. A voter survey showed strong demand for on-the-go access to results and ballot drop-off details, but the decision to add mobile pages came just six weeks before ballots were sent and the grant funding could not be extended.

Socrata used its DataSlate platform to rapidly build mobile pages with live, interactive charts, a dynamic countdown clock, and a map of ballot drop-box locations (including directions and site photos), all updating automatically from King County’s data feed. The project launched on time, attracted more than 236,000 visitors on election day, became the busiest Socrata-supported site that night, scaled without interruption via the cloud, and has since served as a model for mobile election results delivery.
