Edmonton Reports Directly and Openly to Its Citizens

The City of Edmonton set out to deepen transparency and citizen engagement by sharing performance data beyond static reports, but lacked the resources to build and maintain its own open-data system. Facing demands for easy-to-understand performance measures across transportation, environment, public safety and other areas, the city needed a cost‑effective, community‑focused platform to make data accessible and actionable for residents and staff.

Using the Socrata open data platform, Edmonton launched a Citizen Dashboard that links attractive visualizations to underlying datasets, enabling instant updates and drill‑downs from summary indicators to raw data. The move scaled the portal from a dozen datasets to hundreds, sped reporting from days to minutes, improved cross‑departmental access and efficiency, and strengthened public trust by providing timely, transparent performance information.
