Alameda County Saves More Than $565,000 with Open Data

Alameda County, a 1.5 million–resident government in California’s East Bay, needed a way to increase transparency, engage its highly involved community, and improve internal efficiency. County leadership prioritized an open data initiative to make existing information easier to access and to foster collaboration across departments and with the public.

The County deployed a Socrata-powered open data portal within four months, published 100+ datasets, and ran public hackathons and an internal “Rethink AC” innovation challenge. Community and staff-built apps delivered rapid ROI: a shuttle app saved $65,000 versus outside development, and an automated invoicing system cut verification time from 40 to 8 hours and reduced scanning/storage costs by more than $500,000 annually — totaling over $565,000 in savings — while earning recognition for fast, effective innovation.
