SOASTA Creates Million Virtual User Test at Myspace

Myspace launched a new music video service in New Zealand and needed to understand whether its infrastructure could handle a major spike in demand. To test capacity and find potential breaking points, Myspace turned to SOASTA and its CloudTest platform to supplement live traffic with a massive virtual-user load.

SOASTA used CloudTest and the Global Test Cloud to simulate 1 million concurrent users, deploying 800 Amazon EC2 instances in about 20 minutes and generating more than 77,000 hits per second. The test helped Myspace identify capacity thresholds, spread demand across multiple CDN points of presence, and reallocate underused servers in real time, enabling the site to withstand the launch stress that traditional load testing could not have achieved.
