A Snowflake Case Study
Devon Energy, a U.S. onshore oil and natural gas producer, faced repeated failures building a scalable enterprise data warehouse: earlier attempts hit capacity limits, required heavy developer maintenance, and offered no visibility into user activity. The company needed to consolidate an underused data lake, a legacy warehouse, and unstable enterprise datasets into a single modern cloud platform to support growing data and user demand.
Devon implemented the Snowflake-based Devon Data Hub—a combined data lake and warehouse that ingests data from 30+ systems, houses 50,000+ tables (40+ TB), and supports 1,000+ users with 4 million queries per month. The platform separates storage from compute, uses Attunity and Databricks for ingestion and transformation, and provides two governance layers (enterprise and community) to democratize access; as a result, employees can query about 95% of enterprise data and processes that once took hours or days now run in minutes, with large concurrent queries returning in under 10 seconds.
