Chime is a mobile-first, fee‑free banking service for the millennial generation that helps members save and manage money through a personalized app. The company struggled to analyze large volumes of semi-structured JSON data from many third‑party services and a legacy cloud warehouse, which required time‑consuming schema work, lacked performant SQL querying, and needed tighter integration with BI tools like Looker while keeping costs under control.

Chime migrated to the Snowflake Elastic Data Warehouse, which ingests JSON natively and lets analysts use familiar SQL. The move simplified ETL from 14 sources, boosted query performance (3–4x on JSON workloads), and integrated with Looker/Tableau, freeing analysts to build models and dashboards. As a result Chime delivered faster, data‑driven features—such as a personalized fee‑free ATM map—and achieved better scalability and operational efficiency.
