Migrating 500 TB of Data from a Legacy Data Warehouse to Snowflake

Micron, a Boise-based semiconductor manufacturer with over 37,000 employees, needed to modernize its legacy on‑premises data warehouse that was unstable, required a large IT and DBA team, and forced frequent, time-consuming infrastructure upgrades. Working with Snowflake Professional Services, Micron migrated roughly 5,000 tables and 500 TB of data — and hundreds of applications — to Snowflake in under four months. Snowflake’s separation of storage and compute, elastic scaling, and Time Travel snapshots simplified workload management, sped analytics (reducing a two‑week job to a few days), and enabled extensive testing. Post‑migration, Micron shifted 50% of DBAs to strategic work and cut downtime events by over 95%, empowering analysts and data scientists to apply ML to manufacturing data and drive yield and cost improvements.
