Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation Turns to Snowflake's Data Cloud to Better Understand its Constituents

The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (OBWC), Ohio’s exclusive workers’ compensation insurer serving 257,000 employers, faced limits from legacy on‑premises systems that constrained storage, caused resource contention, and made infrastructure maintenance a barrier to deeper analysis of employers, injured workers, and providers. Expanding on‑premises capacity would have been costly, so OBWC planned a cloud migration to unlock new analytics capabilities and answer previously unanswered questions.

By migrating to Snowflake’s Data Cloud—with native SQL, fully managed infrastructure, multi‑cluster shared data architecture, and integrations with tools like dbt and Tableau—OBWC gained near‑unlimited storage and compute, nightly ingestion of billions of rows, and simpler operations. The change eliminated hundreds of scheduler jobs, sped SQL workloads (about 3x faster and shaving two hours off a major batch), enabled self‑service analytics across actuarial, medical, and claims teams, and opened paths to secure data sharing and future ML initiatives.
