A Snowflake Case Study
Saxo Bank, a Copenhagen-based investment bank and fintech that provides online trading and white‑label platforms to institutions worldwide, was constrained by an on‑premises SQL Server data warehouse. Rapid growth — 67.1 million trades in 2020, 40,000 tradable instruments and complex multi‑jurisdictional compliance requirements — pushed storage, performance and data‑access limits and threatened to force costly headcount expansion.
Saxo migrated to Snowflake’s cloud Data Cloud for data engineering, lake, warehouse, science, applications and secure sharing, using features like separation of compute and storage, zero‑copy cloning and Time Travel to scale elastically with near‑zero management. The switch accelerated time‑to‑insight, enabled real‑time risk monitoring, reduced duplication and operational cost, and created a path to replace 35,000 daily SFTP file transfers with secure data sharing while maintaining a lean team.
