Annual Cost Savings for Portland General Electric With the Snowflake Data Cloud

Portland General Electric (PGE), which serves 901,000 customers across Oregon, was hampered by an expensive, inflexible on‑premises data warehouse that required full‑time DBAs, caused data copies and storage bloat, forced day‑long outages for updates, and left users without real‑time, self‑service access to authoritative data.

PGE migrated to the Snowflake Data Cloud on AWS, using AWS DMS, Matillion, S3 and Snowpipe, plus a Data Vault model, secure views and Snowflake Secure Data Sharing to enable governed, near‑real‑time access. The move eliminated much DBA work, automated customer reporting (saving 168 manual hours/year), cut $500,000 in software license costs, and is expected to deliver over $1M in annual savings by the end of 2021 while providing near‑zero maintenance and improved self‑service.
