A Snøhetta Case Study
The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra sought to expand and modernize its historic Powell Hall performance space to improve accessibility, enhance community engagement, and create state-of-the-art facilities for its staff and musicians in time for the hall's centennial. Snøhetta was engaged as the design architect, landscape architect, and interior architect to lead this transformation.
Snøhetta designed a 64,000-square-foot expansion that created a more accessible and welcoming facility. The solution included a renewed public plaza, an expanded lobby with gathering areas, and a back-of-house addition with modernized rehearsal spaces, educational facilities, and improved backstage areas. This project allowed the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra to set a new standard for concert halls, establishing a resonant dialogue with its past while fulfilling its mission to enrich lives through the power of music.
