Health Sciences South Carolina centralizes 6.3K beds of research data with Smile Digital Health

Health Sciences South Carolina, a statewide health data and research collaborative, faced a challenge integrating its siloed clinical and research data systems. Their point-to-point connections and standalone databases prevented real-time data sharing, which limited researchers' ability to perform effective, longitudinal studies. Smile Digital Health was engaged to address this interoperability challenge.

Smile Digital Health implemented a FHIR-based Clinical Data Repository to create a central, real-time link between clinical systems and research databases. This solution normalized data from various EHRs into FHIR resources and used an EMPI to provide a longitudinal view of patient data across institutions. The results included significantly increased data interoperability and availability for researchers, without vendor lock-in, and the project won several awards including Presentation of the Day and Best In Show.
