Case Study: University of Waikato reduces fleet costs and improves safety with Smartrak

A Smartrak Case Study

Preview of the University of Waikato Case Study

The University of Waikato reduced speeding tickets by 86% while saving over $100k on fuel in 2 years

The University of Waikato needed a better way to manage a large, fragmented vehicle fleet that had been run in departmental silos, with inconsistent rules, limited visibility, high fuel spend, and safety concerns. John Ireland, the University’s Vehicle Fleet Manager, looked for a more coordinated approach and partnered with Smartrak to introduce a fleet management and GPS tracking solution.

With Smartrak’s fleet management system, EyeQ mapping, pool booking, and geofence-enabled check-in/check-out, the University gained centralized oversight of vehicles, drivers, fuel use, maintenance, and FBT reporting. The results included fuel spend falling by $100k over two years, rental vehicle costs dropping from $300k to $100k annually, traffic fines reducing from 36 a year to 5, and windscreen repair costs falling from $16k to $9k, alongside improved driver safety and operational efficiency.
