A SmartOrg Case Study
Verathon, a medical device company, was struggling with uncertainty around time-to-market, product development success, and inconsistent market demand forecasts across the organization. The company needed a better way to prioritize projects, reconcile differing sales assumptions, and focus development efforts on the products with the greatest potential impact. SmartOrg’s Portfolio Navigator software was used to help structure these decisions.
SmartOrg implemented Portfolio Navigator to combine sales and growth projections with development cost, pricing, and usage assumptions, then run “what if” analyses and create visual tornado diagrams. The solution helped Verathon align forecasts across teams and focus on the factors most affecting profit. As a result, Verathon improved cross-functional decision making and identified that disposable accessories, not the device itself, were the main profit driver, leading it to lower the device price to grow usage and accessory sales.
