Hewlett Packard needed a better way to manage uncertainty as it pursued radically new business ideas and a portfolio approach to growth in imaging and printing. To support its New Business Creation effort, Hewlett Packard turned to SmartOrg and its project evaluation workshops and Portfolio Navigator software.
SmartOrg helped Hewlett Packard implement a structured value-based evaluation process for comparing multiple high-risk opportunities. In six months, HP canceled all but one opportunity while applying the lessons to create several more, and it ultimately rapidly evaluated more than 30 new businesses, launched 15 new businesses, and accelerated its new business creation pipeline.
