Western Governors University boosts student success with SmarterServices' Personal Learning Guide

Western Governors University (WGU) faced the challenge of better understanding its large population of online students to provide more personalized academic planning and support. Their goal was to gain insights at both the faculty and student level to foster greater success and meet each learner where they are in their educational journey. To address this, WGU partnered with SmarterServices, having previously used their SmarterMeasure Learning Readiness Indicator.

SmarterServices created a customized white label version of their assessment called the "Personal Learning Guide" (PLG) for WGU. This tool provides students and their mentors with detailed insights into cognitive and non-cognitive skills, enabling the creation of personalized support plans. The implementation by SmarterServices led to significant results: taking the PLG is associated with increased student retention and progress, and its scores are predictive of success in specific courses, allowing WGU to target support effectively and empower students through self-reflection.
