Case Study: Western Power Distribution expands DER capacity with Smarter Grid Solutions' Strata Grid

Western Power Distribution (WPD), the UK's largest distribution utility by geographical area, faced a significant challenge in connecting more distributed energy resources (DER) like solar PV to its network. The substantial cost and time required for traditional network upgrades were becoming a major barrier to further DER development. To address this, WPD partnered with vendor Smarter Grid Solutions.

The solution implemented was an enterprise license for Smarter Grid Solutions' Strata Grid software. This allowed WPD to actively manage its network and roll out the solution across multiple Grid Supply Points (GSPs). As a result, Smarter Grid Solutions enabled WPD to have seven GSPs actively managed immediately, with the entire network scheduled to be enabled by 2021, overcoming the barrier to connecting new renewable generation.
