UK Power Networks faced the challenge of managing network constraints efficiently. The energy regulator favored a market-based approach to pay Flex Services Providers (FSPs) for creating extra capacity, but the existing manual email process for procuring and activating these services was inefficient and lacked scalability. To address this, they partnered with Smarter Grid Solutions.

Smarter Grid Solutions implemented its cloud-hosted Strata Grid solution. This allowed FSPs to interact directly and automatically with the system to submit bids and receive dispatch instructions, while a secure VPN connection protected UK Power Networks' core infrastructure. The results were significant, including over 20 generators totaling 100 MW of renewable capacity connected, saving tens of millions of pounds in avoided grid upgrades. Connection times for distributed energy customers were reduced from years to weeks.
