Case Study: Tucson Electric Power achieves scalable DER integration with Smarter Grid Solutions

Tucson Electric Power, in collaboration with EPRI, sought to demonstrate the technologies needed to manage a large-scale consumer adoption of PV solar and other distributed energy resources (DER). The challenge required a DERMS solution from Smarter Grid Solutions that could connect to and control various residential DER types, including solar, storage, and electric vehicles, using different communication protocols.

Smarter Grid Solutions deployed its Strata Grid platform in a private cloud architecture. The solution successfully integrated PV systems using SunSpec Modbus and managed Powerwalls and EV charging stations using OpenADR. As a result, the project successfully demonstrated the integration of all the DER devices and proved the processes necessary to scale the system up to handle 400,000 customers.
