SSE Networks (Orkney) faced a significant challenge, as the need to connect new distributed energy resource (DER) customers was creating multiple constraints across its 11 kV and 33 kV network. This would have required a major grid upgrade costing approximately £30 million. To address this, the utility worked with Smarter Grid Solutions.

Smarter Grid Solutions deployed its Strata Grid platform to provide real-time constraint management through autonomous, fast-acting control. The solution minimized curtailment and released over 25 MW of additional hosting capacity. This allowed 24 renewable generators totaling 39 MW to be connected, enabling 120% of local electricity demand to be met by renewables annually. Crucially, the solution saved SSE Networks £30 million by avoiding the need for a costly subsea cable.
