Case Study: Rolling Energy Resources balances EV charging load with Smartcar

Managing the impact of EVs on the electric grid

Rolling Energy Resources (RER), a subsidiary of Apex Analytics, needed a way to help utilities manage the growing impact of electric vehicles on the grid as EV adoption accelerated. To support managed EV charging, RER partnered with Smartcar and used its API-based vehicle data access to build a hardware-free EV monitoring and demand response solution.

Using Smartcar’s APIs, RER can access EV telematics such as odometer, state of charge, location, and charging status to directly control charging, avoid peak-hour load, and support utilities with time-of-use programs and customer education. Smartcar helped RER quickly connect to a broad range of EV makes and models, enabling real-time load management and EV research for utilities across the U.S. while letting RER focus on integrating EVs into the electric grid.
