Leonard Cheshire, a charity supporting disabled people, worked with Bev, a stroke survivor with limited mobility who struggled to communicate with unfamiliar people. The challenge was to introduce her to assistive technologies that would help her communicate independently. The vendor, Smartbox, provided the Grid software and a Grid Pad 12 device to address this need.

Smartbox's solution involved the Fast Talker app within Grid 3, running on a Grid Pad 12. Bev operated the device with a switch controlled by her left tricep, using a series of clicks to select letters. The app's predictive text and chat history features helped her form words. The result was a significant increase in Bev's independence, enabling her to communicate effectively and use Skype to speak with her family, a key goal. Her daughter stated the technology "given her independence like never before."
