CareTech equips 100 people with Smartbox AAC devices to boost communication

CareTech, a UK-based social care provider, faced the challenge of enabling non-verbal service users with complex physical disabilities to communicate effectively. One such user, Nkeesha, has cerebral palsy and could not use her hands to operate standard touch screen devices, leaving her unable to be understood. She received an AAC device from vendor Smartbox as part of their joint 100 Voices initiative.

Smartbox implemented a Grid Pad 15 device equipped with eye gaze technology and running its Grid 3 software. This solution allowed Nkeesha to instantly interact with the screen and quickly compose messages using predictive text. The results were immediate, giving Nkeesha a voice and the ability to live more independently. She can now access YouTube, WhatsApp, and Skype to connect with family and use the device to control her television.
