Utilities Department Streamlines Response Time

City of College Station Utilities, which provides water, electricity and sewer service to about 30,000 residents, was hampered by outdated electronic and paper maps that made planning and emergency response slow and error-prone. Dispatchers and crews risked missing new infrastructure features and relied on cumbersome map books and handwritten notes that delayed updates and complicated field work.

The utility installed two SMART Board interactive whiteboards with NEC projectors, ArcView mapping and SMART Notebook software, enabling staff to zoom, capture, annotate and share up-to-date maps in real time. The tools streamlined emergency response and project planning, improved data accuracy, reduced map-update time and enhanced crew safety — and have been used around the clock to keep operations more efficient and reliable.
