Using SMART Board™ interactive whiteboards for multidisciplinary collaboration

DPR Construction, serving as general contractor for the UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay, faced the challenge of coordinating a complex, multidisciplinary design and construction effort using building information modeling (BIM). Project leaders, including Atul Khanzode, needed a clear way for architects, engineers and builders to work together virtually and resolve design conflicts before construction began.

DPR created an on-site integrated “big room” equipped with SMART Board interactive whiteboards and used Autodesk Navisworks with AutoCAD/Revit models to review and edit designs in real time. After workshops and quarterly surveys, the team found the approach sped problem-solving, improved cross-discipline understanding, enabled faster decisions, caught issues earlier, and has been replicated on other projects to enhance delivery and customer value.
