Teachers take learning beyond boundaries using a larger screen

Auburn Junior High School in Auburn, Alabama, faced a classroom-visibility challenge: eighth-grade social studies and math lessons—especially maps, diagrams and widescreen videos—weren’t displaying clearly for all students on standard boards. Teacher Kerry Killingsworth, an early adopter, found that a larger, higher-quality display was needed so every student could see lessons without shrinking or rearranging content.

The school installed the SMART Board 690 interactive whiteboard—nearly eight feet corner to corner with a 16:9 aspect ratio and 33% more active space than the previous 680 model—enabling full-size maps, equations and widescreen media while remaining compatible with PowerPoint, Excel and SMART Notebook. The larger boards improved visibility and engagement across subjects; every junior high classroom now has an interactive whiteboard, several with the 690, and the district aimed to equip all classes by September 2007–08.
