Teacher overcomes barriers to learning using SMART products

Karen Lawrence, an eighth‑grade math teacher at Dean Rusk Middle School, turned to SMART Technologies’ SMART Board interactive whiteboard when one of her top students, Brett, was forced to stay home for nearly six months with an autoimmune disease. The challenge was keeping him academically and socially connected to class so he wouldn’t fall behind.

Lawrence used the SMART Board and Notebook software to record complete lessons, capture digital ink and student input, and deliver CDs (with classmates’ audio messages) to Brett’s home. The approach kept him engaged, let him take the same tests, maintain a high A average, earn the eighth‑grade math award, and return to school full time.
