South African students engage in learning with SMART Board interactive whiteboards

Montagu Drive Primary School, a 1,041‑pupil school in the economically disadvantaged Mitchell’s Plain area of Cape Town, needed a way to engage students’ attention and introduce them to a wider world of knowledge beyond their immediate environment.

With donor-funded SMART Board interactive whiteboards (plus Sympodium pen displays and AirLiner slates) and targeted teacher training, the school brought multimedia and internet resources into daily lessons. Teachers became more creative and confident, students were more engaged and expressive (e.g., interactive Afrikaans worksheets linked to pop songs), lessons could be saved and reused, and pupils’ horizons were noticeably broadened.
