SMART Board Interactive Whiteboards Transform Learning for Special Needs Students in Hong Kong

The John F. Kennedy Centre is a government‑subsidized Red Cross special needs school in Hong Kong serving about 150 mentally and physically disabled students. Faced with low attention and limited accessibility—particularly when teaching Chinese characters with traditional whiteboards—the school sought technology to make lessons more engaging and usable for students with motor and visual challenges.

JFK Centre installed four SMART Board interactive whiteboards and used Notebook and existing speech therapy software to create touch‑based, high‑contrast, and resizable lessons. The result: higher student participation and attentiveness, easier inclusion of students with muscular dystrophy and visual impairments, expanded group speech‑therapy activities, and more efficient lesson planning through reusable, server‑stored materials.
