Case Study: Canadian Red Cross achieves faster, more efficient disaster response with SMART Technologies

A SMART Technologies Case Study

People helping people with SMART products

The Canadian Red Cross faced major flooding in Terrace, British Columbia, in May 2007 that closed highways and displaced families, creating an urgent need for accurate, up-to-date information for staff, volunteers and the public. Relying on flip charts and overhead projectors proved slow and inefficient for managing rapidly changing response details.

To solve this, the organization installed SMART Board interactive whiteboards in its Burnaby disaster response facility, enabling touch-controlled displays, live annotation over satellite images, and easy saving and sharing of updates. The boards streamlined call-center operations (including the B.C. Flood Information Line), improved training, reduced paper use and boosted overall response efficiency—prompting enthusiastic endorsement from staff and other offices across the country.
