A SMART Technologies Case Study
The City School District of New Rochelle, led by director of technology Christine Coleman, faced outdated, underused classroom technology and needed a way to shift teachers’ mindset from discouragement to excitement. Coleman, who arrived in 2003, launched a targeted effort to introduce interactive, multimedia tools that would transform textbook‑based instruction and reenergize teaching across the district.
She piloted SMART Board 680 interactive whiteboards in a high school and two middle schools, pairing training with teacher feedback; within months teachers were rearranging classrooms and requesting more units. The district expanded the program to nearly 450 boards across nine schools and an early childhood center by September 2007, improving lesson creation and archiving, student engagement (including students with special needs), classroom focus, and districtwide progress—moving the district years ahead in just three.
