Interactive whiteboard helps students improve reading skills

Mammoth-San Manuel Unified School District, at Avenue B Elementary, faced a challenge: a sixth-grade reading class of 16 students was disengaged and reading well below grade level (an average of 89 words per minute), with low benchmark scores. The district needed to improve students’ reading fluency and generate enthusiasm for reading.

The district introduced SMART Board interactive whiteboards to deliver the Voyager Passport reading curriculum, making lessons more interactive and teacher-led. Within months the class average rose to 125 wpm and later to 165 wpm, seat-work scores climbed into the 80s and 90s, retell fluency and comprehension improved, and the class moved from a low- to a medium/high-reading designation—while engagement and instructional time increased across subjects.
