The Scottish Police College at Tulliallan runs a two-week Reconvention course for probationary officers to rehearse planning and response to major incidents. Trainers faced a challenge in teaching realistic, escalating scenarios—using laminated A4 maps was clumsy, hard to share with a whole class and limited trainees’ ability to collaborate and visualise cordons, evacuation routes and rendezvous points.

The College introduced SMART Board interactive whiteboards (with PowerPoint and bespoke simulation software) so groups can mark maps and photos in different colours and manage incidents as they escalate. The new setup reduced clutter, made scenario decisions visible to the whole class, increased engagement and realism, and has become a key, effective tool in developing officers’ practical decision-making and interagency awareness.
