Metro Transit - Customer Case Study

Metro Transit, the public transportation agency serving the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area, faced erratic, intermittent demand for repair parts across a central warehouse and 14 stockrooms that led to excess inventory, emergency transshipments and parts stockouts that jeopardized equipment uptime. To address this, Metro Transit selected Smart Software and in April 2015 deployed its SmartForecasts inventory optimization solution to better forecast intermittent demand and set appropriate stocking parameters.

Smart Software implemented SmartForecasts, integrated with Metro Transit’s ERP, to calculate SKU-level forecasts, recommend EOQs and automate inventory settings for intermittent pull. In the first six months the solution removed $350,000 of excess stock, cut 15,679 inter-facility transfers, raised perfect-order fill from 92.5% to 94%, and enabled an estimated $241,000 first‑year saving on MRP requisitions; Nucleus measured a 123% ROI, an average annual benefit of $334,233 and a payback of about eight months.
